Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano is, you guessed it, an Italian restaurant in Hollywood Studios. It is located in the Grand Avenue section of the park around the back of Muppet Vision 3D. It serves lunch and dinner and prices range from $15-$34 per person plus sales tax. If you are on the Disney Dining Plan, Mama Melrose is one table service credit.
Mama Melrose is tucked around the back of Muppet Vision 3D and the best way to get to it is going past Muppet Vision and down a set of small stairs, or the ramp, and it can be found just around that corner. What struck me instantly was how quiet it was; there was about 10 other people in the restaurant on a lunch time reservation.
Check in is located just inside the door where there is also a dispenser of flavoured water to cool you down from the Florida heat. Once your table is ready, you will be called through
I will also say from the off that Mama Melrose was my biggest disappointment of my trip and I won't be making a rush to go back. However, everyone else in my party enjoyed it!
The decor inside the restaurant is really nice - there are fairly lights literally everywhere and movie references throughout. The restaurant gives the feel of being sat outside and that is definitely something I enjoyed.
When we were seated, the server was fairly quick to come round and take drinks orders and see if we had any questions about the menu, as well as take the details of the allergy in our group.
My initial reaction was that the menu was actually quite limited. However, I am a big lover of parmigiana, so I knew that was what I was going to go for.
A few of us in my party had the same thing and straight away I could see there was a massive difference in portion sizes between all 3. Mine was by far the smallest, as you can see with the amount of white space on the plate. The other two had two pieces of chicken and much more spaghetti, whereas mine only had one.
I am a big fan of a marinara sauce, but something about this one was not good. It tasted very tinny, almost like metal and that was all I could taste even when combined with the chicken and mozzarella. I ended up scraping the sauce off and eating what I could from it. This could be me just not having a taste for this sauce because, as I said previously, no one else had an issue with their meal. In hindsight, I should have gone for the steak.
Dessert was the saving grace of this meal for me. It was a cheesecake with a strawberry sauce topped with whipped cream. It was spot on; smooth and creamy and the tartness of the strawberry sauce cut through it perfectly. 10 out of 10 for the dessert.
It was obviously my personal taste that made Mama Melrose a disappointment for me, and I am certain that if I ordered something else I would have had a far better experience. However, everyone else in my party really enjoyed their meal so I would say to give Mama Melrose a go on your next trip!
